Accommodating Muslims in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Chief Imam, Mufti Muhammad Arshad, has assured 180 travel agents who attended the recent “Hong Kong for Muslims” Workshop held in Kuala Lumpur that more is being done to welcome Muslim visitors to Hong Kong. Presently, there are 50 Halal-certified companies in Hong Kong, of which 25 are restaurants.  The Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong (Board of Trustees) – Hong Kong’s regulatory body on Halal certification – is looking at increasing the number of certified companies with efforts to promote greater awareness on attaining such certifications, Mufti Muhammad Arshad said.

It’s tough being a woman

The world needs to turn to a market long neglected: the Muslimah. She’s proud, loud and successful, and she wants to spend big money. Thing is: is her lipstick Halal? Observant Muslim women are no longer part of the archetypal myth: the oppressed woman. They are increasingly being heard as professionals, intellectuals and activists. Even homemakers are making their voices heard around the globe. Personalities like Queen Rania of Jordan are renowned not only for their beauty but intellect and wit. Yet all women, whether they wear the burqa, hijab, headscarf or none at all, have a great love affair with cosmetics. It doesn’t matter that one only needs a set of foundation, concealer and powder. There are the hundreds of lipsticks, blushes and mascaras to buy and have fun with! One perennial question still remains: is there a way of performing wudu’ (ablution) without having to take off all the hard work I have put on my face? The second question: is the very fashionable lip gloss I use Halal?

 

Officials seek decree to boost Halal industry

The national government under the fresh leadership of President Aquino is urged to issue an executive order mandating line agencies involved in the Halal industry for the Philippines to fully harness benefits from the trillion-dollar worldwide business.

 

Halal research council

The Halal Research Council (HRC) has been formed for the promotion of Halal Food Market in Pakistan which will provide research, counselling and Halal certification with the collaboration of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Pakistan, Trade Association of Pakistan and many other International organizations for the field of Halal Food. The head office of the HRC has been launched in Lahore with other branches in Karachi and Multan. Meanwhile it has working Strategic Partners in South Africa, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and Mauritius. Despite the fact that it is a Muslim state, Pakistan is only getting a very small share from the export of Halal Food Certification. Only Brazil and India has 75% share in export of Halal Food of Middle East. “Hopefully, with the establishment of Halal Food Market in Pakistan, our export percentage will elevate with a rapid extend”, the HRC stated.

 

Bright ‘Halal’ prospects seen

The market for “Halal” products is so big that Davao and Mindanao businesses can make a good opportunity just by getting their products certified as Halal.

DPIM Proposes Halal Auditing Concept

The Muslim Chamber of Commerce (DPIM) has proposed that the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the government implement the Halal auditing concept.

 

A burqa ban would be un-British

Tory MP Phillip Hollobone has introduced a private member’s bill that will attempt to ban the burqa and the niqab in Britain. His Face Coverings (Regulation) Bill will ban those two extreme forms of face covering, although, as he points out, not the hijab, khimar or chador. I’ll say one thing about multiculturalism – it’s certainly taught us a lot about women’s fashion.

 

Thailand aims to become Halal-food hub

Industry Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat has asked the National Food Institute (NFI) to formulate strategies aimed at raising the current value of Halal-food exports from Bhat 80 bln a year to Baht 100 bln within 5 years.
