In recent months it's come to light that a number of supermarkets have been selling Halal meat without telling unsuspecting shoppers. The Supermarkets included Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and M&S. Halal food is a new concept for many in the UK. Halal literally means permissible. To make meat Halal, it has to be from an animal killed and prepared in accordance with Sharia, including Islamic prayer over the meat by a Muslim butcher.

 

RUSSIA: ICD offers Islamic finance study tours to Russian, CIS officials

The intellectual argument for and the demystification of Islamic finance has gained much ground in Russia and the CIS countries over the last two years, but the political decision makers and bureaucracy, especially the banking regulatory authorities, still need to be convinced about the role an alternative Islamic system of financial management can play, especially in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. As such, Islamic finance in the region is at best a work in progress but the task ahead remains huge.

FRANCE: France to enforce Muslim veil ban from April

France will start enforcing a ban next month on full Islamic face veils, officials said on Thursday, meaning any veiled woman can be summoned to a police station and asked to remove her face-covering or pay a fine.

 

FRANCE: French Muslims Confused Over Halal Restrictions

The news suspended forks on their way to mouths, and sent supermarkets rushing to pull goods from shelves. Last month, the website Débat Halal claimed it had evidence that a popular brand of Halal-certified poultry sausages marketed in France by a giant international food producer actually contain pork, rendering them forbidden — or haram — to Muslims. The accusation led many French Muslims to question how they can be sure that any of the Halal food they buy meets certification standards — only to discover that no single set of standards exists for determining which products are Halal and which aren't. Now, some observers are hoping that the haram hubbub may finally push France's Muslim leaders to agree upon a united code for the Halal food sector — one of the biggest-booming niche markets in the nation.

 

BELGIUM: A European Standard on Halal food?

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) set up a Working Group to analyse the feasibility of a European Standard on Halal food. Its first meeting was held late October 2010 by the Austrian Standards Institute in Vienna.
