Burger chain launches more Halal restaurants in France
A popular fast-food brand said it would extend the number of Halal only restaurants in its chain in France, after a controversial pilot project in February proved a success. Some politicians reacted angrily to Quick's announcement earlier this year of its first Halal-only branches, saying the chain had deprived non-Muslims of a right to standard burgers and promoted social divisions. But the Belgian chain said it would switch 14 more of its French branches to serve only Halal meat, certified as slaughtered in accordance with Islamic practices, bringing the total in France to 22 of its restaurants.

If two worlds would meet in Luxembourg: Islamic finance and shipping
Shipping companies are facing difficulties to get bank financing as the credit crisis has drastically reduced the appetite of conventional banks. Several ship owners have been forced to cancel or postpone their orders of new vessels and therefore to delay the upgrade of their fleets. The world’s economy could suffer from this lack of financing because it relies on the shipping industry to transport the world’s trade. Shipping remains as the most economical and effective means to carry much of the world’s goods. Shipping being crucial for our economy, the demand for shipping services will always be significantly high and the demand for financing to facilitate the construction and purchase of vessels ensures shipping financing to be prominent.
Halal in Europe – Coming of Age

EU: European Parliament aims to make Halal meat ‘second class’
In June 2010, the European Parliament introduced an amendment that, if passed into law, will effectively force Halal – and Kosher – meat products to be labelled in a way that implies that unethical and inhumane practices have been used. The amendment would require that all meat from un-stunned slaughter would have to be labelled accordingly, i.e. “Meat from slaughter without stunning”. Opponents of un-stunned animals have previously tried to force this issue on the basis of animal welfare, but there is no credible evidence that stunning is any less traumatic than slaughter without stunning according to religious guidelines. In the absence of any scientific evidence, the pro-stunning lobby within the EU have changed tack, now claiming that this labelling is necessary for ‘consumer information’.
