Significant quantities of the meat sold in the UK on the open market are slaughtered under Halal standards, it has emerged. Industry estimates suggest strong Muslim demand for chicken and lamb has resulted in about 40% of poultry and 25-30% of lamb consumed in the UK meeting Halal specification.
Halal Slaughtering Discontinued in Iceland
South Iceland meat processing company Sláturfélag Sudurlands (SS) ceased slaughtering lambs in the Islamic fashion recently. CEO of SS Steinthór Skúlason said the decision is mainly based on the reactions of customers after the company’s practices were reported on.

Burger chain launches more Halal restaurants in France
A popular fast-food brand said it would extend the number of Halal only restaurants in its chain in France, after a controversial pilot project in February proved a success. Some politicians reacted angrily to Quick's announcement earlier this year of its first Halal-only branches, saying the chain had deprived non-Muslims of a right to standard burgers and promoted social divisions. But the Belgian chain said it would switch 14 more of its French branches to serve only Halal meat, certified as slaughtered in accordance with Islamic practices, bringing the total in France to 22 of its restaurants.
