U.S.A: Saffron Road Introduces Eight New Antibiotic-Free Products at Whole Foods Market(R)

Saffron Road™, the packaged food brand of American Halal Co., will begin shipping eight additional All Natural, Antibiotic-Free, Hormone-Free, Halal Certified frozen foods to Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM) stores nationally in June 2011. The eight new products slated for distribution include entrees: Lemongrass Basil Chicken, Moroccan Lamb Stew, Lamb Koftis and Chicken Pad Thai, as well as frozen chicken options: Chicken Nuggets, Chicken Bites, Chicken Tenders and Tandoori Seasoned Chicken Nuggets.

More American companies are expanding into Muslim countries, and U.S. Halal consumers are looking for more meal options. With a population of eight to 10 million Muslims in the United States, plus more than one billion overseas, the Islamic market represents a vast, potentially lucrative market for any company involved in the food industry. The challenge, however, is in providing food that both tastes good and is appropriate for the target population.

The sign at the Halal meat counter at Sunny Foodmart says “We can speak your language!” It lists 10 (Urdu, Punjabi, Turkish, Russian, Bengali, English, Pashto, German, Arabic and Parsi) that staff can speak, though there are certainly more, like French. Welcome to the global future of Toronto supermarkets. Sunny Foodmart is owned by three Chinese Canadians who have stocked food from a multitude of cultures and reached out to Muslim customers with a certified Halal meat counter.

The move comes in response to the growing consumption of nutritious tropical fruits, juices and extract in the region, including acai, guarana, camu-camu, cashew and passion fruit.

Halal Opportunities in Secular Countries

Director of Midamar, Jalel Aossey, was invited to speak at the 6th World Halal Forum held on 4-5 April 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In his address to the delegates, he discussed the challenges and opportunities of conducting a Halal business in secular countries. The challenges of serving the Halal market begin with the identification of the Halal consumer.  How are Halal consumers defined and who are they? That answer is difficult in secular countries, as the Halal consumer could be from any one of 56 Islamic countries or simply be native of the secular state. Additionally, many Halal consumers are not Muslim, their decisions to purchase Halal consumables stems from a belief that there are substantial health and other benefits to consuming Halal products. Halal consumers also differ in their own definitions of Halal, their levels of religiosity, and in their personal tolerance for deviation from the scriptures.

 

U.S.A: Abbott Recognized As Company of the Year for Global Halal Initiatives

Abbott received the Company of the Year award from the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA®). The award is based on the company's compliance of Halal in its manufacturing practices and its work towards obtaining IFANCA certification globally. Abbott is the first company in the food industry to obtain Halal certification for all of its products that are able to be certified.
