INDIA: India Brands Go Halal

Seeking their share of the growing Halal industry, different food and healthcare brands in India are getting Halal stamps to woo the country's Muslim population as well are millions of customers around the globe. "With many brands embracing Halal, Indian brands may look at an export market opportunity of about $200 billion in the next ten years," Mohamed Jinna, CEO of Halal India, an apex body for Halal certification, told the Times of India on Monday, May 21. Seeking a better foothold in markets like Singapore, Malaysia and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, different Indian brands were getting the Halal certificate.

EU: Avoid Misuse of Religious Exemptions to Stunning

At the Agriculture and Fisheries Council this week, the Swedish delegation briefed the Council on the enforcement of the general requirement to stun animals before slaughter. Some member states supported the Swedish delegation mentioning a possible overuse of the possibility to slaughter animals without preliminary stunning in certain member states. The Commission recalled the existing EU framework and pointed out that its implementation relies on subsidiary. Recommendations on ritual slaughtering have been published in 2011 and a study is ongoing to evaluate the opportunity for informing the consumer on this type of slaughtering.

 

MALAYSIA: Golden Churn Butter Now Available At Retail Halal Section of Food Outlets

Golden Churn canned butter is now available at the Halal section of all Malaysian food retail outlets following a verification inspection on the Ballantyne Foods Pty Ltd New Zealand factory. The inspection confirmed that the Golden Churn canned butter had complied with the Malaysian Halal standard as per Halal certificate issued by the New Zealand Islamic Processed Food Management, a certified body by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).

 

INDIA: Global Health City, Chennai – First hospital in India to achieve Halal certification

Global Health city, world class tertiary multi super specialty hospital, is the first hospital in India to receive the Halal Certification for its hospital services by Halal Development Corporation (HDC). This initiative will further help in boosting medical value travel from Muslim countries like SAARC, MENA and S.E Asian Region which constitutes around 75 percent share of patient traffic.  Dr. K. Ravindranath, Chairman & MD, Global Hospitals Group, said “With about two billion Muslims worldwide and a major number of international health travellers coming to Global Health city from the Islamic nations, we see Halal certification as a form of approval that boosts our patients’ trust and confidence in our range of hospital services. To earn the certification, Global Health City had to meet strict Islamic guidelines dealing with hygiene & dietary regulations of global standards.”

UNITED KINGDOM: Stunning before slaughter can cause pain, is cruel and tortures the animal

The Islamic Medical Association and British Muslims were shocked on 5th May 2012 to see an erroneous, misguided statement written by Professor Bill Reilly (a consultant in veterinary public health) regarding the religious slaughter of animals used by Muslims and Jews, where he accused Halal slaughter of being cruel to animals when not using secular stunning methods before slaughter!

Islamic Halal slaughter has increasingly come under attack from animal rights again activists telling tales of barbaric blood-thirsty ritual slaughter. There are two distinct issues: there is the vegetarian agenda which wants to ban all consumption of animal products, and there is the animal rights lobby which argues for a humane method of slaughter.

 

MALAYSIA: Comply fully to get Jais’ Halal cert, logo

The State Islamic Religious Department (Jais) requires 100 per cent compliance from food operators before approving their application for `Halal’ certification and logo to be displayed at their premises. Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs), Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said this also meant that only Halal certificates and logos issued by Jais would be recognised in the state. The matter was under the purview of Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) at national-level.

 

UNITED KINGDOM: British Muslims defend Halal slaughter after calls for ban

Muslims in Britain have rebuffed calls to ban animals’ Halal slaughter after a leading British vet this week called for curbing or even banning the practice popular among the country’s Muslim and Jewish minorities. Professor Bill Reilly, former president of the British Veterinary Association, called for curbing the practice of slaughtering animals without stunning.

 

MALAYSIA: Jakim Does Not Commercialise Halal Certs - Jamil Khir

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) does not commercialise its Halal certificates as its application fees covered the costs of research and laboratory tests on the status of product ingredients, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.
