MALAYSIA: ECERDC Attracts RM48 Billion in Investments So Far

The East Coast Economic Region (ECER) to date has attracted RM48 billion worth of investments from domestic and foreign investors. Of these investments, RM20 billion came through mostly in the oil and gas, agricultural, tourism and manufacturing industries, said the chief executive officer of ECER Development Council (ECERDC), Datuk Jebasingam Issace John.

MALAYSIA: Sozo Global To Invest RM15 Million for Halal Processing Plant

Sozo Global Ltd, a convenient food manufacturer, is investing RM15 million to set up a Halal processing plant in Malaysia. Its chief executive officer Shen HengBao said the company hopes to conclude land acquisition by year-end and the plant construction will start in early 2012. Sozo Global is still looking to identify a location that has easy access to ports and workforce, as well as the assistance of the authorities, he said. It is likely that the plant would be located in Penang. The ready-to-serve food specialist has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Halal Development Council.

QATAR: Meat import procedures to be tightened further

The GCC Standardisation Organisation would take steps to further tighten procedures regarding imported meat, undersecretary at laboratories and standardisation affairs Mohamed bin Saif al-Kuwari has said. Talking to Qatar News Agency after delivering an opening speech at a training course on food safety management, which kicked off on Monday under the patronage of HE the Minister of Environment Abdullah bin Mubarak bin Aboud al-Midhadhi, al-Kuwari said these procedures required new laws and legislation that oblige countries that export meat to the GCC states to slaughter animals according to the Islamic law and Gulf standards.

MALAYSIA: Hundreds of Malaysians Gather at Mega Trade Exhibition in Nanning

Hundreds of Malaysians from both the public and private sectors have gathered here to join their Asean counterparts for one of the largest trade exhibitions in China. Many arrived yesterday onboard a chartered flight from the KL International Airport while some travelled from their stations in other parts of China. In the eighth edition of the China-Asean Expo (CAEXPO 2011), Malaysia is the Country of Honour and will play host to the opening ceremony on Oct 21.

 

UNITED KINGDOM: New Range of Halal Stocks available for caterers

Essential Cuisine has launched a chef-inspired range of Halal-approved stocks to give caterers complete peace of mind when creating dishes in today’s ethnically-diverse society. A video taken in the late 1990's shows Sheikh Zayed standing in his majlis talking to Mohammed Khalifa Al Habtoor, the speaker of the Federal National Council who served from 1997 to 2003. I vividly recall watching that video when I was a teenage student in Paris. Sheikh Zayed, wearing his golden embroidered bisht, a sort of cape worn by the heads of tribes in the Gulf on major occasions, gestures to the audience in his majlis, saying, "I swear by God Almighty that I did not know that there were now people (citizens) who were living in rented accommodation. Until I have received their request letters. In Abu Dhabi and in Dubai and from Sharjah and from Ras Al Khaimah. There are people living in rented accommodation. How can they be living in rented accommodation? How can any ruler accept that his citizens are today living in rented accommodation?"

ITALY: Halal food market grows, 5 bln-euro potential in Italy

Halal  food is seeing double-digit growth the world over and even in Italy - due to rising interest by companies in the sector - it could soon become normal to find ''Islamically correct'' labelled products on supermarket shelves. ''The development potential of this market,'' said Hamid Roberto Distefano, the managing director of Halal Italia, an agency authorising Islamic certification of firms and products, ''is around 4 or 5 billion Euros.'' Since the label was brought in a year ago on the initiative of Co.re.is. (Islamic Religious Community), sponsored by the Foreign, Economic Development, Health and Agricultural Policies ministries, 30 small and large enterprises have been certified and the same number are undergoing the procedure to do so.

 

PAKISTAN: Pakistan likely to get 'GSP Plus' status by 2014

Business Recorder Logo Federal Commerce Secretary Zafar Mahmood on Sunday said that Pakistan is expected to get 'generalised system of preference (GSP) Plus' status to avail duty concessions on its exports to European Union member countries by January 2014. Talking to reporters at the inaugural ceremony of Pakistan-Indonesia Business Forum (PIBF) at a hotel here, the Secretary said that the new legislation by the EU for qualify for 'GSP Plus' status has bright chances for Pakistan to get.

 

MALAYSIA: Malaysia to Make Strong Pitch for Food & Tourism Business at CAEXPO 2011

Malaysia is set to entice visitors to the 8th China-Asean Expo (CAEXPO 2011) in Nanning, China, next week into what the country is best known for -- food and tourism. One-third of the 151 Malaysian exhibitors hosted by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) at the 2,900 square metres Malaysia Pavilion are food and beverage producers. For its 270 square metre "City of Charm" Pavilion, Malaysia will showcase Johor Baharu this time after Melaka last year and Kuching in 2009.
