McDonald's fast food restaurant has launched its first halal meals in Britain attracting customers to west London from as far afield as Birmingham.

The Southall Broadway restaurant is hosting a four week trial of sales of halal chicken dishes, which are all priced the same as non halal chicken.

One customer spent £30 on fuel to travel from Birmingham for a chance to try the halal McDonalds.

Network engineer Amjad Khan said the new launch was "best thing since the light bulb" and hoped it would be offered throughout the country.

Until now the only meals Muslims could tuck into at a UK McDonalds were the fish or vegetarian options.

Restaurant boss Atul Pathak estimated that 70 per cent of customers were now trying the chicken dishes approved by the Halal Food Authority.

Local religious and community leaders were also invited to find out more about the food and inspect the kitchen.

Saud Aslam from Ilford said: "I’m surprised that they didn’t do it earlier".
