About 400 halal products of various types from Malay enterprises throughout the country will be on display at the Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) exhibition-cum-retail centre in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, when it begins operating in September.
The chamber's deputy president, Syed Ali Al-Attas, said today the RM1 million centre at the heart of the Middle East's commercial hub will also house a restaurant featuring Malaysian food and a commercial area.
It will be managed by DPM Food Industries (Marketing) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of DPMM Johor, and Konsortium Infrastruktur Binaan Malaysia Bhd.
"Malaysian products have great market potential in the UAE, more so halal ones, because Malaysia is very well known among UAE residents and they hold a high regard for our halal products and do not question its status," Syed Ali, who is also DPMM Johor president, told Bernama.
He felt the Dubai exhibition-cum-retail centre will spur Malay entrepreneurs into penetrating the Arab markets and expanding their marketing network.
The centre's establishment, he added, comes on top of DPMM's efforts in fostering cooperation with wholesale agents in Dubai, getting them to bring in the products of entrepreneurs from Malaysia.
"We hope that with our retail centre, it will be much easier for Dubai consumers to obtain Malaysian goods," he added.
According to Syed Ali, the products to be showcased at the Dubai centre will include processed food, beverages, health supplements, herbal and cosmetic products, frozen food and fresh fruits.
Elsewhere in that region, DPMM has also held discussions with its business partners to open another exhibition-cum-retail centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
He expects the Jeddah centre to open before year-end.
"Jeddah and Saudi Arabia are yet another market with great potential for the products of Malay enterprises," he said, noting that the Gulf states like Oman and Yemen are also ripe for these products.
