Applying a worldwide halal standard can be practical and profitable for food producers, whether in Muslim or non-Muslim countries, said World Halal Forum chairman Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said the standard for halal certification now varied from country to country.
"The halal certificate issued by Jakim is considered the best in the world. Jakim’s halal standard has even been applied in foreign countries."
A common halal standard would be discussed at the World Halal Forum (WHF) 2007 here on May 7 and 8, he said.
"We hope to show non-Muslim participants that a global halal certification will widen their market to the Muslim world."
The global halal market, estimated at US$580 billion (RM2.13 trillion), grows by about 10 per cent annually.
Speaking yesterday at a Press conference on WHF 2007, Khairy said he hoped local companies would take advantage of the international presence at the forum.
"Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Abdul Aziz al-Saud, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono have been invited."
