Report for the First International Halal Science Symposium, Bangkok
1-2 September 2006
The Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University organised the First International Halal Science Symposium during 1-2 September 2006. This meeting is attached to the First Thailand Congress of Nutrition and took place at BITEC Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand.
There were a total of 169 participants, half of whom were international participants from 22 countries, including Australia, Bhutan, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and the United States. Also witnessing the event were diplomatic corps from 17 countries including the ambassadors and minister counselors together with press and reporters.
After the opening ceremony presided over by the Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, there were two signing ceremonies. The first one was initiated between Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University and the International Halal Industry Alliance as represented by Mr.Nordin Abdullah and Mr. Abdalhamid Evans from Malaysia.
The second was the MOU between the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences together with the Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University and Thai Airways International (TG) for collaboration in Halal kitchen system set-up and implementation in the TG kitchen at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the new airport in Bangkok, Thailand.
Speakers in the symposium include many relevant experts especially those who represented the core institutions of Indonesian-Malaysia-Thailand-Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Halal Laboratory Network , i.e. Dr.Winai Dahlan and the Halal Science Centers team, Professor Yaakob Che Man from the Halal Product Research Institute of Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Dr.Irawadi Jamaran from Institut Pertanian Bogor, Indonesia.
Moreover, the symposium had the honour that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) sent the expert in Codex Halal Guideline. This gave strength to the symposium. Speakers from industry, media, help reflect the trade and industry perspective.
In addition, the International Halal Science Journal was formed with a full spirit of introducing Halal science in the academic community. This can be seen as an innovation to incur Halal science as a separate and established discipline. The speakers in the symposium as well as some other experts form the editorial board.

"The gap between the Shariah Scholars and achieving global Halal standards for industry is Halal Science. Halal, simply put, means permissible in Arabic. It means the food prepared must be up to the standards which also include safety and hygiene. So many non-Muslims have found it to be a credible stamp of hygiene and standards.
"From a practical research standpoint the formation of The Halal Science and Research Network jointly chaired by Thailand and Malaysia as the cost of conducting research is much less in South East Asia, considering the amount of research that is required represents a huge cost saving. However, Universities and research institutes globally are welcome to be part of the network. Universities in South East Asia should be used to conduct research on Halal due to the reduced cost and expertise already developed in these countries. The Universities from other parts of the world can send observers, we will then jointly develop the research findings."

"One of the clear messages from the World Halal Forum was the gap between the Industry and the Scholars. The Halal Science and Research Network will have far reaching effects as it will form the basis of argument over areas that have long be dominated by the minority groups in the western nations, in areas such animal rights, fair trade and social responsibility. From an industry perspective there are a lot of unanswered questions. It is important to develop specific research projects that facilitate the development of the Global Halal Industry. We know that Halal is of higher quality but the scientific proof needs to validate the clams so that it can be used in Marketing of Halal products and services, and the development of new technologies."
Resolutions
Formation of The International Halal Science Journal to be published by KasehDia and to be edited by Professor Dr. Yaakob Che Man (Halal Products Research Institute, Malaysia, to introduce and highlight the findings in Halal science in the academic community. To meet annually to discuss developments and issues facing the Halal Industry and the role that Halal Science can take to improve the situation. The International Halal Science Symposium is to be held annually pioneered by the Halal Science Center and the hosts for the second meeting will be Malaysia in 2007, the third one the Philippines(to be confirmed) or Indonesia(to be confirmed) in 2008. The fourth host will be the Halal Science Center, Thailand in 2009 and the fifth will be South Africa in 2010.
To Share information and research findings facilitated in part by the formation of Research library and a database of relevant information. For findings of projects to be presented at the World Halal Forum.
To develop specific research projects required for the development of the Global Halal Industry
To facilitate and validate the development of Global Halal Standards, and take an active role in that process
To provide Scientific based Industry relevant solutions in line with the Shariah.
