China’s food market beckons

FANCY expanding your food business into China?

The upcoming 2nd China International Foodstuff Trade Fair 2006 that will be held in Huangpu from Oct 12 to 14 offers an opportunity for Malaysian food companies to promote their businesses and create partnerships in the world’s biggest consumer market.

The event will be held at the International Exhibition Centre of China National Demonstration Base of Food Industry, which was built in 1999 to reinforce Huangpu’s position as China’s food centre.

Last year’s event drew over 100 buyer groups from Asia, the United States and Europe, including about 10 from Malaysia. It generated a trade volume of some RMB600mil (RM275mil).

The town especially welcomes Malaysian food businesses, its mayor Wang Hanlian, tells the group of visiting journalists.

“We encourage halal food manufacturers or distributors. We find that Malaysia is an ideal gateway to promote such food to the world’s Muslim community, especially in the Middle East, due to Malaysia’s multi-ethnic composition.”

Wang adds that the number of participants at this year’s trade fair is expected to increase to 400. The event also includes a celebration of French food with more than 30 French food distributors promoting economic opportunities between the different nations.

According to the mayor, the fair will be a great way for food entrepreneurs to get an overview of the food business in China and to plan their penetration of the enormous market represented by China’s 1.3 billion people.
