Import Of Cosmetics Without Halal Label Still Allowed

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- The import of cosmetics without the halal label is still allowed, said Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim) Director-General Datuk Mustafa Abdul Rahman.

Malaysia only prohibits the import of meat or meat products without the halal label, he said in a statement here Friday.

"Imported consumer goods like cosmetics are not part of the prohibition because presently there is no regulation that can stop the goods from being brought into Malaysia," he said.

He refuted a report by an English daily on May 12 that said Jakim would ban imported consumer goods particularly cosmetics that did not carry the halal label.

Mustafa said Jakim was only preparing a standard relating to cosmetics and other consumer goods.

"The standard will be a reference for the manufacturers of the goods if they wish to get the halal certificate from Jakim," he said.
