September 23, a holy Muslim month of Ramadan begins, during which a fast (sawm) is practiced by all observant Muslims.
Fasting helps Muslims develop self-control, gain a better understanding of God’s gifts, and greater compassion towards the deprived.
Fasting in Islam involves abstaining from all bodily pleasures between dawn and sunset, including sexual activity. Each moment during the fast, a person suppresses their passions and desires in loving obedience to God, islamreligion.com informs.
In Moscow, for the first time, an Iftar tent will be set during Ramadan 2006 before the mosque on the Poklonnaya Gora, where Muslims will be able to break fast when it is over.
Halal food cooked by all the rules of Muslim cookery will be served there. Lectures on Islam will be held at some Moscow universities.
According to the Council of Muftis, about 20 million Muslims live in Russia, Ekho Moskvy reports.
