Shoppers do not trust supermarkets for Halal meat, says research

By A Corresdpondant

British Muslims are shunning large supermarkets in favour of smaller shops and local Halal butchers when buying Halal meat.

According to the recent two-year research by the University of Sussex, Muslim shoppers do not trust big supermarkets for their Halal meat. The trend illustrates an apposing shift to the majority of shopper in the UK who are going the opposite direction.

Despite not trusting their local supermarkets, 84% of the respondents said they never ask for authenticity when buying Halal meat from local shops.

Although 79% of respondents said they thought supermarkets provided more hygienic atmosphere, sell better quality Halal meat and less expensive than local shops respectively, however the majority (80%) still were unlikely to buy their Halal meat from supermarkets.

Only 4% said they would buy their Halal meat from supermarkets and in a show of poor marketing 90% of respondents did not know that supermarkets in their local area were selling Halal meat.

Other reasons Muslim shoppers preferred small shops include the fact that many supermarkets do not stock all types of food from their country of origin and that Muslims would prefer purchasing everything at the same time at one place rather than shopping around different places for different grocery items.
