After two pilot pre-launch editions of The Halal Journal, and many months of research and investigation into the scope and depth of the halal markets and related issues around the world, we can begin to discern the immensity of this subject.
Against the backdrop of an increasingly polarised world, the elements of the halal market begin to stand out. One is reminded of those optical illusion drawings, where there is some kind of pattern there but you can’t quite see it – it is just random dots and squiggles; and then it jumps out at you, an image that you had not seen before, that was there all the time, waiting to be recognised. Order appears from within the chaos.
The halal market is the arena for halal commerce – halal goods and services, halal contracts and standards, and halal currencies. It is a market that is not just for the Muslims, but for all mankind, as in the verse of the Qur’an, "Oh mankind! Eat what is halal (lawful) and wholesome on the earth".
It is also a market that is not just restricted to food, but that naturally encompasses all that is lawful and good; ultimately, it only excludes the haram.
Halal is the force that will, over the coming decade, exert increasing influence within the arena of world trade.
Everywhere we looked we have seen new growth. Business sectors that did not think that the halal had any real significance for them, are fast recognising that this new perception will open up new areas for business development.
While in the obvious arenas of food and finance, where growth rates for halal are outstripping other sectors, it is in the new market arenas that we are seeing the emergence of a new market paradigm.
In fashion and textiles, in tourism and hospitality, logistics, shipping and transportation, warehousing and cold storage, events and conferences, training and standards, branding and marketing – arenas that did not previously think in terms of halal, are now realising that this is the beginning of a whole new ballgame.
This is a market about people – people who want what is lawful and wholesome. The most striking thing about the halal market is the extent to which the various market sectors are interrelated.
People who want halal food also want to ensure that the farming practices, the storage, shipping and packaging processes are halal. They want halal travel to halal destinations, as well as halal clothes, toiletries and medicines. They want their business and financial transactions to be halal.
Halal is a way of looking at the world, of being in the world.
Halal is a global force that is about to make its presence felt.
This is just the beginning.
