MALAYSIA should take the lead in establishing itself as a global “halal” hub via a branding exercise, Yayasan Nurul Yaqeen trade and economic panel member Datuk Seri Abdul Mutalib Mohamed Razak said yesterday.
Abdul Mutalib, who is chairman of Media Prima Bhd and Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Bhd, said Malaysia’s foray into the global “halal” food business would not only yield high returns but also raise the country’s profile as a progressive Muslim nation.
“Our branding is currently very weak since we seem to lack a global marketing strategy.
“Given China’s interest in making Malaysia a centre for manufacturing ‘halal’ food, we should take the initiative of establishing ourselves worldwide,” Abdul Mutalib said after opening a Penang-level seminar on Islamic business ethics in George Town.
The long-day seminar, jointly organised by Yayasan Nurul Yaqeen and Persatuan Pedagang dan Pengusaha Melayu Malaysia, was attended by 150 participants comprising traders and entrepreneurs.
In his speech, Abdul Mutalib expressed concern that the local halal food industry is currently dominated by non-Muslim operators even though Muslims are the largest consumers.
