Two Halal- certified Chilean firms are set to penetrate the Malaysian market with their products.
Producer of “Halal” malt beverages, Maltexco SA, and exporter of mussels, St Andrews SA, is looking at increasing their exports to Malaysia next year.
They are among the companies which will participate in the "Flavours of Chile" hosted by the Chilean Trade Commission on Nov 10 and 11 in Kuala Lumpur.
Sales Manager Asia, Europe & Oceania of Maltexco SA, Boris Teran said the company planned to grow in Malaysia as it was an important market.
Teran said Maltexco, the leader in Latin America in the production of natural ingredients derived from barley for food and beverage industries in the world, currently has two customers in Malaysia and expects to secure one or two more by year-end.
Maltexco prepares its malts from barley grown in the central and south zones of Chile, which are noted for their very similar climatic conditions in northern Europe.
Teran said the Halal product certification received from the Islamic Centre of Chile last year had enabled the company to open new Islamic markets and expand further in these countries.
Another firm, St Andrews SA, engaged in the largest mussels farming in Chile and one of the world's biggest, is also expanding its operations in Asia, including in Malaysia.
St Andrews market manager Fernando Prieto sees great potential to penetrate the Malaysian market being the only company in the industry that has received "Halal" certification for its products.
The company's products, marketed under the brand name "Chiloe Seafoods" received Halal certification from the Islamic Centre of Chile in March this year.
Prieto said the company hoped to work with at least two more distributors in Malaysia to increase its mussels export next year.
In sync with the plan, he aims to increase exports to Malaysia to 200 tonnes next year. The company is currently working with three distributors to supply its mussels to supermarkets and had exported 80 tonnes of mussels to Malaysia in the last two years, 40 tonnes were delivered two months ago.
"We started exporting to Malaysia about two years ago. There is potential to increase our exports to Malaysia," Prieto said.
St Andrews plans to increase its mussels export to Asia to 1,500 tonnes next year from 600 tonnes it expects to deliver this year.
