‘Source ingredients from credible suppliers’

Should Brunei be interested in grabbing a slice of the global Halal pharmaceutical market, one of the most important aspects to keep in mind is sourcing ingredients.

“Once you source ingredients, you have to make sure that you source from a credible supplier … and traceability is very important when you talk about Halal, so work with a supplier when you develop these things,” said Adrian Jacklowsky, DSM Nutritional Products director in the Asia-Pacific region.

Jacklowsky, who was here for the International Halal Products Expo CEO Forum on Thursday, cited DSM Nutritional Products, a maker of vitamins, Omega 3 oils and other nutritional ingredients, which he said has a “Quality for Life” programme which is a corporate culture. “It stands for quality, reliability, sustainability and traceability, and most of our products are already Halal-certified,” he said.

Asked about pharmaceuticals pairing up with the Brunei Halal Brand, Jacklowsky said that he sees that it is something possible. “What I see now with the Brunei Halal Brand, with food products, is that they’re not yet including healthy ingredients and that could be the next step once these products are established.” He added that brands like the Brunei Halal Brand would be developed into a brand that people who purchase Halal food and pharmaceuticals can trust.

Asked about the size of the growth potential for pharmaceuticals and food, Jacklowsky said that some of the numbers that he saw recently showed that an estimated US$650 billion was spent on Halal goods around the world with US$150 billion of the amount spent on food.

“Take roughly two billion Muslim people in the world, that means that there’s only US$75 spent on food every year, so you can imagine the growth potential for the food industry,” he said.

He added that businesses should take into account that the Muslim population is growing every year, which would mean that in a few years from now, there would be over two billion Muslims in the world who will be increasingly looking towards brands like the Brunei Halal Brand which they can trust.

At the moment, Jacklowsky said DSM “doesn’t have any particular plans” to tie in with the Brunei Halal Brand.
