Comprising the mainland of the world’s smallest continent, Australia seems out of place in this part of the world. Even with massive immigration in recent decades, most of the estimated 21 million Australians are in fact descended from 19th and 20th century European settlers, the majority from Great Britain and Ireland. Influenced by the Anglo-Saxon roots, Australia’s culture and outlook at times look like a misfit in the Asia-Pacific region. Yet, this has not deterred the country from thriving.
